The word "Wobbly", a nickname for IWW members, humorously illustrates the union's efforts to combat racism.  A Chinese restaurant keeper in Vancouver in 1911 supported the union and would extend credit to members.  Unable to pronounce the letter "w", he would ask if a man was  in the "I Wobble Wobble". Local members jokingly referred to themselves as part of the "I Wobbly Wobbly," and by the time of the Wheatland strike of 1913, "Wobbly" had become a permanent moniker for workers who carried the red card.  Mortimer Downing, a Wobbly who first explained the etymology, noted that the nickname "hints of a fine, practical internationalism, a human brotherhood based on a community of interests and of understanding."

report back your findings about the two week waiting period and sub, we would all like to know.  I'm pretty sure you can't.

If you can't find the answers you need in your benefit package literature, then contact TEIBAS at (905) 771-6262 or 1-800-267-0602  Smiley  They will give you your answer, though it may not be the one that you want.  Shocked

Apparently there is an agreement between pogey and the sub fund that you can only get subsidized for every week that you get paid.  And since we don't get paid for the two week waiting period, we can't get sub fund. Cry

Brother Asproy,
I beg to differ with that assumption check out this site www.hrsdc.gc.ca/asp/gateway.asp?hr=/en/cs/sub/0200/0200_030.shtml&hs=eyp#top

Here is part of it, interesting read and leaves a person wondering why?

<<    Table of contents    >>
3. Receipt of Employment Insurance (EI) benefits

The plan must indicate that the employee must apply for and be in receipt of EI benefits.
4. SUB payments when employee is not in receipt of EI benefits

Notwithstanding item 3, the plan may provide SUB payments up to a maximum of 95% of the normal weekly earnings when the employee is not in receipt of EI Benefits, and:

    * is serving the two-week EI waiting period; or
    * has insufficient hours of insurable employment to qualify for EI benefits; or
    * has exhausted the EI benefit entitlement.

The employer decides which, if any, of the above situations are covered by the plan. If an employer introduces a SUB plan to offset the EI two-week waiting period only, a complete description of the plan must be submitted for approval.

Ofcoarse there are lots of plans, but then again why are we using this one. CAW has the cadillac plan and us the scooter it seems

 Huh?

You’re absolutely right about the CAW having the Cadillac! In the summer of 2003, at the Chrysler Bramalea shutdown, I was talking to some of the line workers. Not only was their sub fund $190 a week, but EI set up info., applications, and drop off on site in their cafeteria in order to accommodate them. To top it all off, they didn't have a two week waiting period, they started receiving benefits right away! We definitely have the scooter?! Roll Eyes

Id like to see our plan dealing with the sub to have it available sooner to the member, what I mean is why can;t they have it available for pick up that same week you submit it aslong as its submitted say on the wednesday.  For example  if you have direct deposit with EI, ( which requires special permission from them to get the stubs from those cheques) if you phone or internet your reports, say at 8am on the day before its due, you will recieve your money in the bank on tuesday the next week, you then recieve the pay stub on wednesday, take it to the hall and if your picking up the sub fund, they have it ready on the following wednesday, thats 6 days  not including sat and sun.

I just don't see why they can't have the sub ready before wednesday.  It helps us all out who need it, and it would be nice to get it faster.

Can anyone here explain what the SUB plan is and how it works?

Says on the form the Employer must pay contributions to the plan for you?

What Employer?  One has to be out of work to claim..

The Sub Fund at my last check, was up to 12 million dollars in the fund. Now with not being able to draw the fund that you self contribute to, if filed not at trade, the fund will probably grow substantially.

Did you know that money is taken from the sub fund and moved to health and welfare, the old vacation pay fund and so on and so forth?

How about changing the requirements to qualify for the fund since we have such an excess that we can lend to other funds that we have. This was a fund we started in bad times with money from our raise to help out unemployed brothers.

Maybe when we have a surplus of say 10 million. We start getting the money back on the cheques until it is again needed, or is this like EI and they use this money to pay off other things then it was intended  for.

Our local is becoming like the federal government, more concerned about bringing in new people instead of looking after the ones that built the estabilshment .

Well-said brother!

But what I can't understand is why we are transferring monies to a defunct fund in the first pace? Who is administering said fund, how much are they charging and what exactly are all the dollar amounts?

Why isn’t this information posted on the TEIBAS web site?

Dear 353aint and Tractorman

The trustees of all are funds is presently Joe Fashion, Geoff Nash, John Smith and Barry Stevens is the Chair.  Part of a change made to our trust document was when I was still the Chair is the President of L.U. 353 is automatically the Chair of the Board.

Every member has the right to request information from the Trustees on any issue and it is best to put it in writing so you have an exact record of what was asked for.

You are right about the SUB Fund because I resent paying in to a fund only to have the surplus skimmed off to cover up another miscalculation. While the Trustees have a mandate to make sure the members welfare is looked after our Trustees have a responsibility to keep the members informed.  There has been far too much politics on the unions side in the decision making in the past.

Hopefully the contractors will continue to endevour to keep us on the right track and our actuary for Eckler Partners will continue to carry on their great service.  Need I say more?

What proof of EI are they looking for?  It's all done online..  No real statement..  Also don't all contractors contribute to sub?
