IBEW Locals in 15 States and Provinces Have passed a Motion To Support The OMOV Proposal
Many years ago when I joined the brotherhood, I was a stranger in a new land.My only purpose was work and to find my way without harm and to do the best job I could.Sadly, within Local 353 there were members who were so opposed to an administration they hurled vindictive and spite towards anyone who dared show support and work in common cause with Joe Fashion. That was the eye opener for me.Joe Fashion is and was a great union leader. All his mortal enemies ALL worked for him at one time. Their names are well known in the IBEW. Gill and gang, including Dave Hussey. Speranza. And Bobby Gullins. In fact, Joe hired Bob Gullins not once, but twice.Sadly, I too recognize that Joe had flaws, but it was good decency that always got the better of him.He trusted and gave young union upstarts an opportunity to grow, get involved, bring magic and enthusiasm to the job of being a representative.Having watched the trials and tribulations from a very privileged position, I witnessed the political self destruction of each and every one of them. They collectively soiled our union organization with rancid allegations of corruption, corporate unionism, broken promises, and other complaints of the me, me, me variety.I learned one vital lesson in that time. Joe Fashion is and was a good union man. His door was always open for a member and representative who had a good idea. In time I realized that some of the representatives were less then honourable. They whispered foul obscenities about Barry Stevens being of questionable sexual orientation, his support of gay causes, his pink slippers, and all the other code words immortalized on this website. They made rude remarks about Joe Fashion in the 353 office while as his employees they shouted “Joe, your nurse is here to change your diapers.” All of this did one very important thing. It inoculated me from any criticism they may have of me or foist upon the faint of heart. They emblazoned in my heart the commitment to look them in the eye and piss on their trousers as they would mine. These opponents of Joe Fashion claim to be true bearers of the union faith. Yet their political legacy is thread bear and hollow.Empty rhetoric about Ed Nott and Mike Lloyd is comical. An education director who did not expand his training empire, refused to support a west-end training center. Failed to get on the boat and lobby for free government money that would provide capital improvements and other money for our new training center, including equipment and supplies for two training centers; is truly amazing. The man was so stuck in yesterday that it was inevitable that once others started working in Tech Ed, his palpable lack of vision and energy was obvious to all. Thus, his retrenchment and need to seek solace with other folks who see themselves as disenfranchised. The test here is how a person responds once they leave the union office, particularly after they have never missed a Local 353 pay check in 20 years. Some did so with honour such as Bob Gill who never sued his union. But not Ed Nott, no this man along with his political soul mate filed a law suit. And these are the fine upstanding brothers that some cling to as beacons of brotherhood. That’s your choice. I can honestly say that I have no regrets and recognize each and every one of you who armed only with political ambition seek union office not because they have any good ideas. But on a hate theology created for a person who did not earn such disrespect such as Tim Brower and Joe Fashion. In that strange undercurrent of politics I was born. I am no superman, but I fight like him. Make no mistake, you piss on my family or people I respect, you earn an enemy for life. Each and every one of you have been decent to me at some time. But it is your vulgar political and social behaviour that soured me. I will never let a good man be bullied. I detest bullies. I also see through the political nonsense of Perry Speranza, but so does our membership, industry, and anyone in a position of political power. Empty politicians like Bob Gullins only prove one thing. Democracy is an imperfect institution and we must be on guard to protect against the tyrants and imposters that under blanket of free speech and brotherhood have no scruples and thus are hollow salesman of despair. Tim Armstrong said it best about change and the need of some to cling to yesterday even though yesterday contains no hope for our problems of today. Gullins peddled nostalgia and a political faith. Yet leadership is more than having a good idea. In a union it means being able to work with those around you and they in turn for you. If your entire political philosophy or modus operandi is to create schisms, such as Perry Speranza, and those that latch onto his coattails see this as leadership, we are all doomed. The gauntlet has been dropped. The future of the IBEW has been written. No foul mouthed pretender of any sort will hijack our union for their ill gotten gain. I say this to each and every one of you. You know the political danger that lurks within me. I have not unleashed the fury yet. I prefer to work and keep my head low in the pursuit of helping my fellow brothers. But I will not allow Erik Klyne and company to erode the basic principles of brotherhood because they bring no noble purpose to the administration of a union. I am the dude, and you can read my op-ed piece every month in the GTA. And remember, I am working for you!barry thanks for the proxy link...please use my other email - call me tonight, we have to talk about Perry and his tool crib gig. Sounds interesting? TC
